In 1945 the Fund granted its first annual Conductor’s Award, the oldest award to honor conductors for distinguished contributions to American music. The first recipient was Howard Hanson. Among other recipients were Dean Dixon, 1948, shown here; Leopold Stokowski, 1952; Robert Shaw, 1955; Leonard Bernstein, 1958, shown below; Gunther Schuller, 1970; Lukas Foss, 1974; Eugene Ormandy, 1977; Leonard Slatkin, 1984; Dennis Russell Davies, 1987; Mstislav Rostropovich, 1990; Michael Tilson Thomas, 1993; James DePreist, 2000; James Levine, 2009; and Alan Gilbert in 2011.
