Pianoforte Recital by Edward MacDowell

Program, January 10th, 1898

Edward MacDowell Papers, Rare Book and Manuscript Library

MacDowell performed a number of his own works — including by the pseudonymous Edgar Thorn — as well as Grieg's Notturno, Op. 54, No. 4, and works by MacDowell's contemporaries Paul Giesler and Templeton Strong. Strong was MacDowell's fellow student in Germany, and remained his close friend and colleague throughout his life. MacDowell played this recital at the request of a group of Barnard women, as a benefit to raise funds for their college yearbook, "The '98 Mortarboard." The women paid off their debt, and the Class of '98 voted to establish a scholarship witih the surplus, the first such gift given over to the newly formed Student's Aid Committee of the Alulmnae Association.
