Edward MacDowell
Critical and Historical Essays: Lectures Delivered at Columbia University, Boston: Arthur P. Schmidt, 1912
Edward MacDowell Collection, Rare Book and Manuscript Library
As early as 1897, the Department of Music was prepared to offer music as a major or minor subject. From the beginning the department's course offerings were open to Barnard women as well as Columbia College and special students. Today, students may major, concentrate, or minor in music, depending on whether they are enrolled in Columbia College, Barnard College, or the School ofGeneral Studies. The curriculum includes courses in the history and theory of music, and an increasing number of students undertake private instrumental instruction.
The essays collected in this volume were based on MacDowell's undergraduate lectures. They show the breadth and diversity of his knowledge and interests, as well as what was, in his day, a progressive attitude toward teaching.
