Brander Matthews Hall was built in 1940 at Amsterdam and 117th Streets. Its theater was ideal for Opera Workshop presentations, having an orchestra pit. It was razed in 1958 to make way for a new building to house Columbia’s Law School.

The caption to this photograph identifies Professor Matthews as "one of the outstanding figures in literary life in America ... one of the founders of the American Copyright League and [a] noted critic and essayist."
