Saul Levi Mortiera was a rabbi of the Sephardic community in Amsterdam, at a time when many crypto-Jews (Jews who had converted to Christianity after the expulsion of the Jews from Spain and Portugal, but practiced secretly as Jews) were arriving from Spain and Portugal and were considering the open practice of Judaism. His monumental work, shown here, was an attempt to teach his constituents of the truth in Judaism and as opposed to Christianity. Columbia has three manuscripts of this work.
Gift of Congregation Temple Emanu-El, 1892.
