Gumby's Past > "The Negro in Bondage"
A similar sense of connection between past and present is on display in this page (see above: "The Negro in Bondage," p. [22 verso, flap open]) from one of Gumby's scrapbooks on the subject of slavery. This page positions an early nineteenth-century advertisement offering reward for the capture of a runaway slave from the Mt. Vernon plantation alongside a modern picture postcard of the Mt. Vernon mansion and an editorial from a contemporary newspaper describing George Washington's role as a slave owner. Gumby's interests in historical collection are further on display in the two accompanying pages, each of which features an assortment of antebellum slave ads.
