Gumby's Culture > Imagining Africa, Part Two
While Gumby's interest in Africa appears from time to time (but nevertheless sparingly) throughout his collection, he also devoted one volume to items about Haiti and two to Ethiopia (in addition to his more general volumes on "The Negro in Africa"). These two pages appear in one of the Ethiopia volumes, and include photographs of members of the Ethiopian royal court taken in 1924. On page 23 (above) is Menen Asfaw, wife of Ras Tafari (later Haile Selassie, the Ethiopian emperor), along with an attendant. Page 24 (above right) features another of Asfaw's attendants, taken by the same photographer as part of the same survey of Ethiopian royal life.
