For immigrant Jews in America in the early 20th century, the press was their lifeline to finding their footing and learning about life in the “Goldine Medine” [Golden Country]. Newspapers often featured tips and advice columns to help struggling immigrants adapt to American society. To help its newly arrived readers adjust to life in New York, the Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) paper La Amerika printed a dictionary translating short Ladino phrases in the languages critical to a Jewish New Yorker in the early twentieth century: Ladino, English (in Hebrew and Roman characters), and Yiddish! Interestingly enough, the section at the end of the book, which includes questions and answers for preparation for the citizenship text, only includes English (and English transliterated into Hebrew characters).
