Der Groyser Kundes/The Big Stick

Der Groyser Kundes was founded in 1909 as a satirical journal, a kind of foil to the very serious Forverts.  Its irreverent articles and illustrations left nobody unscathed, from socialist activists to very religious Jews.  In this image, however, a tone of seriousness seems to be at play, as Uncle Sam sits dejectedly on the steps with his head in his hands, the “American Constitution” and the “Declaration of Independence” on the ground next to him.
