Gumby's Peers > "Your History"
The cartoons featured on these pages represent the popular front in the more general project undertaken by figures like Woodson, Schomburg, and Rogers. Appearing in newspapers with African-American owners like New York's Amsterdam News, Baltimore's Afro-American, and Pittsburgh's Courier, these capsule biographies were designed to showcase the diverse impacts that black people had made on world history in order to inspire African Americans to demand social equality in the present and continue to achieve individual and, by extension, collective greatness. Gumby's appreciation for such a project is belied both by his preservation of these clippings and by the many scrapbooks he devoted to documenting the achievements of individual African Americans who achieved renown both historically and during his own time.
