The Jews of Corfu: Between the Adriatic and the Ionian

Prayer in Corfu > Prayers and Poems for Special Occasions

Beyond the standard prayers for every day, Shabbat, and holidays, the Jews of Corfu produced a series of penitential prayers to beg for assistance with difficulties. Here we have three selihot, or volumes of penitential prayers:  The first contains special supplications for a community-mandated fast day following a theft from the synagogue (bound with a volume of penitential prayers printed in Venice in 1739). The second is an illustrated volume of penitential prayers for the time known as "Shovevim," named for the Torah portions read during the winter months, and the third, also illustrated, is a volume of selihot for various special dates on the Jewish calendar.

The final image, a manuscript celebrating a victory following a property dispute (digitized here), shows the kinds of prayers that were written after a long-prayed-for salvation.
