The Jews of Corfu: Between the Adriatic and the Ionian

Prayer in Corfu

Hebrew printing did not begin in Corfu until the late 19th century. In order to print prayer books, Corfiate Jews would have had to send their texts to the major cities of Hebrew printing, like Venice. While a handful of prayer books were indeed printed with the unique liturgical rite of the Jews in Corfu, manuscript prayer books were far more prevelant on the island well into the 19th century.
