The Student Homophile League, founded at Columbia University in 1966, was the first LGBTQ student organization in the country. The group offered counseling and promoted social events, but mostly existed to fight for fair treatment. League members participated in all the major campus protests of the 1960s and 1970s, demanded recognition for queer studies, and worked for equal rights beyond the university.
