1968: The Global Revolutions

New Movements Rise > Christopher Street Liberation Day

Greenwich Village was central to the Gay Rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s, which expanded civil rights campaigning to include LGBTQ individuals. In June 1969, the Stonewall Inn, a well-known Village gay bar, was raided by police. As officers began brutally removing patrons, hundreds of protesters gathered on the street to fight back. A large crowd eventually formed, slowly driving the police away. The first gay pride parade – officially called Christopher Street Liberation Day – occurred on the first anniversary of the Stonewall demonstrations.
