1968: The Global Revolutions

New Movements Rise > Ecology and Activism

Activists in the 1960s brought a perspective of critique to American society’s celebration of capitalism, materialism, and corporate culture. Physical comfort for the few did not compensate for the sufferings of the many, nor was it justifiable in the growing sense -- during the peak of the Cold War -- of the fragility of the natural world. Inspired by Rachel Carson and other ecologists, a growing movement organized for stronger legislation to conserve resources and protect the environment.
