1968: The Global Revolutions

Freedom Struggles: Get Organized! > Newark Rebellion

The Newark Rebellion of 1967 was among the most violent confrontations of the decade. As with the uprisings in Detroit and Watts, it began with an incident of police brutality and escalated into a week-long insurgency. In the midst of the rebellion, Leroi Jones (later to change his name to Amiri Baraka) was severely beaten by Newark police.
