Freedom Struggles: Get Organized! > Buy Black

Increased spending power and a heightened national interest in African-American identity led to the rise of a “Buy Black” movement, as well as the flowering of media designed specifically for black audiences. Founded in 1951, the weekly Jet magazine was an important chronicle of the civil rights movement, while also providing such lighter fare as fashion and beauty advice and  entertainment industry news.
