Getting Started > Planning

Libraries and archives have traditionally created exhibits in the physical world, where their expertise in information and subject allowed their exhibits to shine.  How can we provide this same transformation of expertise and interest in the virtual world?

First, plan your exhibit before you begin.  What would you like to see in your exhibit?  Imagine cases, themes, and routes – how will you ask your visitors to learn about your topic?  This helps determine your navigation online.

Second, think about the web.  Web exhibits never close.  Users don’t have to visit your exhibit in a linear fashion.  Your presentations have context through text, labels, juxtaposition, and digitization.  We don’t have to choose whether or not we can display recto or verso on the web – we can display both!

Finally, think about your timeline in planning.  Do you need to secure rights and permissions?  Are there preservation issues that need to be addressed?  Do you have to coordinate with a physical exhibit or other event?  We will need to know these things up front.
