Nathaniel Fish Moore Photographs
Nathaniel Fish Moore was a student, a professor of Greek and Latin, the first College Librarian, the eighth University President, and even a Trustee. This exhibition focuses on Moore's life after Columbia. It was during his visit to the 1851 Great Exhibition in London, that Moore is said to have become interested in the nascent art of photography.
In retirement, Moore devoted his time his new hobby, in particular the salt print paper-based photographic process. As an early amateur photographer, Moore prepared his own chemicals and papers and he arranged varying backgrounds and props for his models. He took photos of his family and friends, of New York City and the Highlands of the Hudson area, and even a few self-portraits. Because salt prints are fragile and unstable, Moore's works have been digitized for long-term preservation.
