Arch > Arch
Arch was created as part of a collaborative class project at the Scripps College Press under the direction of Kitty Maryatt. As its colophon explains, the ten "paper architects" who created the book were all women. Issued in an acrylic slipcase, Arch consists of double-sided accordion-folded sections that are sewn together in pairs and illustrated with pop-ups and cut-outs. Unfolded, these sections form an object with architectural qualities.
The women used knives and bone folders to produce the intricate, sharp-edged cut-outs, which overlap with each other when the sections are connected. Looking through Arch from the title page, the edges of these cut-outs appear like buildings in a landscape. Three typefaces appear in the book: Garamond, Ehrhardt, and Fournier. These were letterpressed into the papers with four Vandercook printing presses, producing a text that is also figural.
