"Stephen Crane Set," a cantata for mixed chorus (SATB) with instrumental ensemble of thirteen players, was commissioned by the Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University in honor of its one hundredth anniversary. Kay chose four poems by Crane: "Black Riders," "Mystic Shadow," "A Spirit," and "War is Kind" for the texts.
It was premiered by the Chicago Musical College on February 4, 1968, with David S. Larson conducting.
