Solo Instrument and Orchestra > Aulos
"Aulos" for solo flute, two horns, string orchestra and percussion, was commissioned by John Solum, to whom the work is dedicated. Kay wrote it in 1967 and also arranged it for flute and piano.
The work was premiered in its full form on February 21, 1971 by the Indiana University Chamber Orchestra, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, with John Solum, flute, and Wolfgang Vaccano conducting.
The work has been recorded by Kevin Scott and the Metropolitan Philharmonic Orchestra on the Albany Record label. Those with Columbia UNI access can hear the whole work through the Naxos Online Music Library:
