The Student Movement: “Can You Remain Silent?” > Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee

Founded in 1960, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee focused its early grassroots activism on the rural South. Using sit-ins, freedom schools, protest marches, and many forms of direct action, members worked to integrate public facilities, and register the African American electorate to vote. These efforts were met with a fearsome assault of white terror, documented in nearly every issue of SNCC’s newspaper, The Student Voice.
