Protests in the spring of 1968 escalated from small vigils that drew a few dozen to major demonstrations that sometimes attracted a hundred or more students. They multiplied in volume, frequency, and acrimony as the semester wore on. Various groups began to increase their involvement, by supporting, or by decrying or protesting SDS, and advocating that the university take action against the rising swell of antiwar anger.
