Society in Crisis > Prager Strasse

Prager Strasse. Otto Dix (1891-1969), 1920.

Galerie der Stadt Stuttgart, Germany.

In this painting, Dix, one of the pre-eminent chroniclers of Weimar culture and decadence, uses mangled and neglected World War I veterans to remind the viewer of past tragedy, while foreshadowing the nightmare to come, in the early National Socialist pamphlet headlined Juden Raus! (Jews Out!).
