Ritual > Women's supplications

[Tkhines for the High Holidays and Sukkot]

Paks, 1828

General MS 286

General Manuscript Collection

Tkhines (“supplications”) were personal prayers for individual circumstances, usually written for women (“Tkhine for lighting the Shabbes candles”; “Tkhine for immersing in the ritual bath”), with instructions in Yiddish.  Hundreds of tkhines were printed between the 17th and 19th century, but very few exist in manuscript.  This one was written specifically for Pearl bat Phinehas (wife of Abraham Deutsch), whose name appears within specific prayers.
