Origins of Spanish Instruction at Columbia University > Velázquez de la Cadena
From his arrival in New York Velázquez de la Cadena both taught and published multiple works aimed at teaching Spanish and English. His best-known work is A Pronouncing Dictionary of the Spanish and English Languages, published for the first time in 1852 in New York. Although it was based on a series of previous publications this dictionary became one of the most popular bilingual dictionaries, with innumerable reprints and editions to the present day.
This title demonstrates the lasting market impact of his oeuvre. In 2003 Academic Learning Company, LLC acquired the rights to Velázquez de la Cadena’s Spanish and English Dictionary and launched its division Velázquez Press.
Velázquez de la Cadena also published pedagogical works for Spanish-speaking children. Colección de los primeros libros necesarios para la instrucción de los niños españoles covers reading, math, and religious instruction.
