Network: Publications, Clubs, and Trips > Spanish Clubs
The Institute sponsored a National Federation of Spanish Clubs and another for students of Portuguese in schools and colleges. It also organized an intercollegiate alliance of clubs in and around New York that held an annual poetry recitation contest, among other activities. In addition to orientation and advice, the constituent clubs received a medal to be awarded to the best student (see next page), as well as copies of Suggestions for Spanish Clubs and the Cartilla Escolar Cervantes. The latter contains a biography of Miguel de Cervantes, an anthology of passages from Don Quixote de la Mancha, and a vocabulary of this work.
As indicated in this booklet, club work was seen as a way to stimulate the learning of Spanish and Hispanic culture among students in an interactive and fun way --hopefully "without realizing that they are studying".
