Foundation: Between Wars, Diplomacy, and New Markets > Casa Hispánica
In 1930, President Butler informed the Institute’s director, Federico de Onís of the decision to found a Casa Hispánica to house its activities. Although it did not stop working with the other institutions that gave rise to it, with the founding of this building the Instituto de las Españas was officially integrated into Columbia University.
Until it moved to its current location in 1966, the Casa Hispánica was located at 435 West 117th St. -a building that no longer exists today.
Although it had begun its functions in 1931, the Casa Hispánica was officially inaugurated on February 21, 1934.
