Wild Boar in the Vineyard: Martin Luther at the Birth of the Modern World

Indulgences: An Economy of Forgiveness > Celifodina

Celifodina
Johann von Paltz (1445-1511)
Erfurt: Wolfgang Schencken, 1502
Burke Tower BT450 .P35 1502g

This work of pastoral guidance was written by Johann von Paltz (c. 1445 – 1511), an Augustinian friar and one of Luther’s superiors and (possibly) mentors. He wrote extensively about indulgences in a theologically correct way, but was loyal to the Church. The woodcut shows friars “digging” in the Scriptures for the hidden truths of the Christian faith.
