NotesAlthough this portrait of William Wilberforce may be by John Russell, and is similar to replicas painted ca. 1800, the inscription on the scroll must have been added later, or the portrait itself is a studio work, as Russell died in 1806 and the passing of the law abolishing the slave trade took place in 1807.
